First for robust, impartial expertise

First Person Consulting is an independent, well regarded care consultancy with extensive experience of medico-legal assessments and reporting.

Established in 2005 our offices are centrally based in Staffordshire, but we work throughout the UK and overseas.

Stephanie Cotterell leads a team of very experienced Nurses providing expert witness services to our clients and to the Court.

We accept instructions from Claimant and Defendant Solicitors and on a jointly instructed basis.

We prepare comprehensive and impartial reports for personal injury and clinical negligence claims, specialising in complex care needs and catastrophic injury (Quantum).

We aim to provide reports and recommendations that are thoughtful and objective, evidence based and reflective of current best practice.  We always try to ensure that our reports are transparent, straight forward and helpful to the court.

We operate a stringent quality assurance system.  All our reports are compliant with the Civil Procedure Rules (Part 35) and we adhere to the Cresswell Principles of expert evidence and the Expert Witness Institute’s Code of Professional Practice.

Our Nursing and Care Consultants are required to have a minimum of eight years’ experience in their clinical field and all have extensive experience in their particular specialism.  We require evidence of their current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and membership of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).

They undergo an extensive in-house programme of induction to cover company policies and processes and expert witness practice.

They also attend certified training courses with specialist providers such as Bond Solon according to their identified training needs.  The Consultants undertake shadow assessments and shadow report writing as part of their initial training alongside an experienced Consultant.

We facilitate ongoing mentorship and professional networking opportunities.  All Consultants receive professional supervision and maintain continuing professional development with regular training opportunities.

All our Consultants are required to have appropriate indemnity insurance cover relevant to their level and sphere of practice and they are encouraged to apply for full membership of the Expert Witness Institute when their experience permits.

Our Consultants are experts in nursing and care and have advanced assessment and report writing skills.

We can provide expert reports for Claimant and Defendant Solicitors, Insurance Companies or on a jointly instructed basis to address a variety of issues:

> Past, present and future care

> Case management

> Reablement

> Rehabilitation

> Loss of service

We provide full and comprehensive assessment reports with detailed, costed analysis of care and case management needs following a domiciliary assessment.

We can also provide short reports, desk-top reports prepared on sight of papers only and critiques.

We provide ongoing, timely support and advice to our clients throughout the litigation process and throughout the lifetime of each case we continue to provide a clear and impartial opinion on the care issues.

We participate in expert discussions, attend conferences with Counsel as required and where necessary will attend Court to give evidence.
